CENTRIST
CENTRISTS espouse a "middle ground" regarding government
control of the economy and personal behavior. Depending on
the issue, they sometimes favor government intervention
and sometimes support individual freedom of choice.
Centrists pride themselves on keeping an open mind,
tend to oppose "political extremes," and emphasize what
they describe as "practical" solutions to problems.

Other
Political Philosophies
Right (Conservative)
Conservatives tend to favor economic freedom, but frequently
support
laws to restrict personal behavior that violates "traditional
values." They oppose excessive government control of business,
while endorsing government action to defend morality and the
traditional family structure. Conservatives usually support a strong
military, oppose bureaucracy and high taxes, favor a free-market
economy, and endorse strong law enforcement.
Left (Liberal)
Liberals usually embrace freedom of choice in personal
matters, but tend to support significant government control of the
economy.
They generally support a government-funded "safety net"
to help the disadvantaged, and advocate strict regulation
of business. Liberals tend to favor environmental regulations,
defend civil liberties and free expression, support government action
to promote equality, and tolerate diverse lifestyles.
Libertarian
Libertarians support maximum liberty in both personal and
economic
matters. They advocate a much smaller government; one
that
is limited to protecting individuals from coercion and violence.
Libertarians tend to embrace individual responsibility, oppose
government bureaucracy and taxes, promote private charity, tolerate
diverse lifestyles, support the free market, and defend civil liberties.
Statist
(Big Government)
Statists want government to have a great deal of power
over the
economy and individual behavior. They frequently doubt whether
economic liberty and individual freedom are practical options in
today's world. Statists tend to distrust the free market, support
high taxes and centralized planning of the economy, oppose
diverse lifestyles, and question the importance of civil liberties.
Hello!!!
I'm so glad tomorrow's the last day of our exams! (March 13, 2008) last two subjects: Filipino and Biology
Well, here's the thing, I find English subject easier than Filipino... which is kinda weird because I am a Filipino... haha, anyways, I just wanted to share my notes in Biology... It's about the Human Reproductive System and Genetics....
... I'd love to talk about Genetics, it's my favorite...
Genetics
- a branch of Biology that deals with Heredity and Variation of Organisms
*Factors that Determine your Individual Make-up:
1. Heredity
- refers to the Transmission of character from parents to offspring through the genetic material
2. Environment
- includes all the external factors that influence the expression of your heredity.
Gregor Johann Mendel - father of Genetics
- Austrian monk who chose garden peas for his experiments
Why Garden Peas?
1. Garden peas has SEVEN pairs of contrasting traits
2. Cross-pollination was easy to perform
Stamen - produce pollen grains that form sperm nuclei
Pistil - contains egg cells at the base
Pollination - transfer of pollen from stamens to pistil
Self-pollination - pollen is transferred from stamens to pistil on the same flower or another flower of the same plant
Cross-pollination - involves flowers in 2 plants
Mendel discovers the principle of Dominance
- Mendel allowed several generations of peas to self-pollinate
- He found that the seven pairs of contrasting charaters he had identified were always handed down from parents to offspring
Priciple of Dominance and Recessiveness:
- states that in a heterozygote organism, the dominant trait is expressed while the recessive trait is masked
Law of Segregation:
- states that members of a gene pair also separate during gamete formation
Law of Independent Assortment:
- states that the expression of one particular trait does not affect the expression of another trait
"Genetic Terms:
- Dominant - the characteristic that always appeared in the offspring of a cross between parents with contarsing colors
- Recessive - the character that did not appear in F1 generation but reappears in F2 generation
- Hybrid - the offspring of a cross between two parents that differ in one or more traits
- Allele - an alternate form of a gene
- Homozygous - an organism having a pair of identical alleles for a character
- Heterozygous - an organism having two different alleles for a character
- Phenotype - an organism's appearance including physiological and physical traits
- Genotype - an organism's genetic make-up
- Dominant - expressed -> capital letters
- Recessive - masked -> small letters
Body Cells/Somatic Cells
-> Mitosis
-> 46 Chromosomes
Gametes/Sex Cells -> Female - xx ; Male - xy
-> Meiosis
-> 23 Chromosomes
Punnett Square
- reginald c punnett
- a tool used to know the possible offspring
- a device that shows the possible combination of genes or allele
Monohybrid Cross
- involves ONE trait
- FOUR possible offsprings
top : female trait
vertical : male trait
Dihybrid Cross
- involves TWO traits
- SIXTEEN possible offsprings
